Virginia Western's baja team finishes in top 12 of national competition

Posted: Updated:
Virginia Western Community College's Baja team is back on campus after its most successful national competition in school history.

The team consists of engineering students who design and build an off road racing vehicle throughout the school year.

The team finished 12th overall at the Kansas baja competition last weekend, the best finish for a community college in the event's 38 year history.

"With the knowledge (we've gained) and the team members have improved," said VWCC Motorsports Co-Captain William Fortune. "Going to school, being in school, learning everything you need to learn in order to come and apply it to this car and to this program."

The team beat more than 100 other schools, including the University of Virginia, University of North Carolina and Cornell.

The Ivy League school's baja team had a $100,000 budget.

Compare that to Virginia Western, whose team had a $8,500 budget.
