SAN DIEGO -

A 91-year-old North Carolina woman ran her way into the record books Sunday when she completed the Rock and Roll San Diego Marathon.

It took Harriette Thompson of Charlotte seven hours, seven minutes and 42 seconds to complete the 26.2 mile course.

She set a record for the fastest time for a woman over 90.

The previous record was just under 8:53.08

Thompson, a cancer survivor, ran to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

As for getting so much exercise at the age of 91, she said, “I guess I could say it's never too late, and you feel wonderful if you -- I'm sure that if you exercise, you certainly know the benefits of it," she said.
