Roanoke County Student Receives Support From School Friends and Teachers

Posted: Updated:
One thing holds true in Southwest Virginia, our schools are a major part of the community.  For one Vinton 8th grader that sense of community has meant so much in her recovery from a major surgery that kept her out of school for part of the year.

When we first met Carly Graybill eleven years ago, she was three years old and excited about vacation to the beach.

Now, as she wraps up her 8th grade year at William Byrd Middle School, not much has changed as far as what she looks forward to during the summer, "I'm looking forward to just having a laid back summer. I am going to swim and go to the beach."

The support of her friends has also remained the same, but this past school year was a challenge for her.  Carly went through a fourteen hour spine surgery in November.

"Carly was born with Spina Bifida. She has done extremely well, but that is just part of having that particular birth defect," explains Carly's Mom Mandy Graybill.

Carly's spine surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital took about fourteen hours and meant that she would miss 6 months of her 8th grade year.

"It is kind of scary because I woke up and I couldn't move. They let me know that they were there for me I wasn't as scared," says Carly.

Carly recovered from paralysis but still uses a wheel chair.  At the "Home of the Terriers" you will find a closeness among students and teachers.

For Principal Tammy Newcomb it is home,"I am a little biased about the student body because this is my community. This is where I went to school, where I taught, where my children went."

While Carly prepares for high school fun with her close friends, her family may be thinking that it seems like just yesterday playing croquet in the backyard was enough entertainment.
