Roanoke's Economic Development Director Wayne Bowers says the department is working on triple the amount of projects this year.

He says it's a sign the economy is starting to bounce back from the recession.

"I think people just got tired of not having any economic activity, "Economic Development Director Wayne Bowers says. "It's been pinned up and now it's being released. It's very encouraging that it's happening all across the country and we are seeing the local impact here in Roanoke."

The number of permit and inspection application the city is processing has also dramatically increased this year.

Permit applications hit a seven-year high in 2013. While inspection requests went up to more than 14,00 requests in 2013 compared to the major drop around 11,000 requests in 2010.

Planning, Building, and Development Director Chris Chittum says it's a good sign the economy is looking up.
