Crash on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County

UPDATE, MONDAY 6/9/14:

State Police identify some of the people involved in the crash.

The driver of the SUV, Amy Shea from Elliston, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Deputies say the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Kenneth Craft of Roanoke, has not been charged.

The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE 5:41PM

 State Police say four people are in the hospital after a fiery crash on Interstate 81.

It happened just after 3:00 p.m. at Mile Marker 130.

 Police say an SUV was driving Southbound in the Northbound lane when it sideswiped three cars and then hit a Lexus head on.

The driver of the SUV was partially thrown out of the car, and was air-lifted to the hospital.

 The driver and passenger of the Lexus were also air-lifted to the hospital.

A spokesperson with VDOT says both the right and left lanes on northbound Interstate 81 are back open with about a 6 mile backup.

A spokesperson with Carilion says two Lifeguard helicopters were sent to the scene of the accident.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Montgomery County at mile marker 130 are currently closed due to a vehicle crash.

Responders are working to implement a detour to route northbound I-81 traffic onto Route 11/460 at exit 128 (Ironto) to return to I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns).
