YMCA presents its first annual Father’s Day 5k & Cookout

Roanoke, VA.– YMCA of Roanoke Valley presents its first annual Father’s Day 5k & Cookout, Saturday, June 14 at 9:30am at the Salem Family YMCA.  The event features a 5k and a one-mile fun run followed by a cookout and fun activities for the entire family.

YMCA of Roanoke Valley President and CEO Mark Johnson said, “The first Father’s Day celebration actually started at the YMCA back in 1910.  We thought the Father’s Day 5k would be a great way to invite the community to celebrate dad and have some fun being active together.”

THE RACES start at 9:30.  The 5k is $30 for YMCA members and $35 for non-members.  The 1k is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.  The race fee includes a race shirt and a ticket to the cookout and post-race fun

COOKOUT & FUN starts at 11am.  Father’s Day wouldn’t be complete without a cookout, so each race participant will get a meal ticket. Others can buy a meal for just $5. Lunch includes hot dogs, BBQ, baked beans, potato salad, chips, cookies and a drink

After the race, the Y will host family fun including games, inflatables, face painting, kids’ activities & crafts and a fun photo booth!

SWAG & PRIZES: All participants get a commemorative race shirt. Awards will go to the top 3 overall males and females and to the top 3 male and female runners in specific categories.

JUST FOR DADS: Dads can compete to win prizes and the honor of being named the "Best Golfer," "Fastest Dad" or "Highest Jumper" in the Valley!

The YMCA of Roanoke Valley was founded in 1883 and includes Kirk Family YMCA, Salem Family YMCA, YMCA Express at Gainsboro and the YMCA Magic Place. The YMCA focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in its mission throughout the Valley. For more information on the YMCA, visit www.ymcaroanoke.org.
