The Bridges project becomes part of newly designated River and Railroad Historic District

Posted: Updated:
On Monday, developers with The Bridge project in downtown Roanoke announced the designation of the site as part of the new Roanoke River & Railroad Historic District. The 47-acre district includes five buildings located near the Walnut Street bridge.

"We are excited about this district being created because we are going to preserve a lot of these old building and re-purpose them" said Aaron Ewert, The Bridges project manager.

Most of the structures were built before the late 1920's. Over the next decade, developers hope to preserve buildings unique features and make a complete overhaul.

"We are really excited to bring some new restaurants and entertainment to the area" said Ewert.

Ewert said he hopes to attract a big-named company to the new historic district. The first phase of The Bridges includes a restaurant/coffee house, office space and more. Ewert said the 157 apartments are almost complete. He said 40 units are expected to open in September. The remaining apartment units are expected to be complete by October.

In the future, developers hope the Roanoke River and Railroad Historic District attracts more jobs and people to the area and becomes an economic driver for the Star City.
