Edwards, Habeeb: Budget could pass this week

Posted: Updated:
Two Virginia leaders say the General Assembly could pass a budget by the end of the week.

Senator John Edwards (D-Roanoke) and Delegate Greg Habeeb (R-Salem) both believe a compromise could be reached quickly.

The House of Delegates and the Senate will reconvene Thursday evening in Richmond with the budget taking center stage.

A budget including Medicaid expansion seems unlikely after Monday's sudden resignation of Senator Phillip Puckett (D-Russell), giving Republicans control of the Senate.

"That doesn't mean we can't get Medicaid expansion eventually, I think we can," Edwards said. "The question is how do we go about doing it? We'll see, the first step will be this week as we try to get a budget. I'm hoping if we can't get Medicaid expansion in the budget we'll find another way to do it."

"Every indication we have is that the leadership of both parties in both houses has agreed to proceed with a clean budget without Medicaid in it," Habeeb said. "Let's fund our schools, local governments, all of that and then we'll deal with Medicaid in a special session."

If the General Assembly passes a budget it will go to Governor Terry McAuliffe's desk.

He's given no indication if he will sign or veto a budget that doesn't include Medicaid expansion.
