Police investigate heroin trafficking issue in Roanoke

Posted: Updated:
Roanoke City authorities are now investigating what they believe to be a heroin trafficking problem in the star city.

The investigation began in January when Roanoke Police Department’s Narcotics and Organized Crime unit learned that several people were trafficking heroin from out of state to sell in Roanoke.

As WSLS has reported, heroin is a growing problem here in our area and across the state.

As of now police aren't releasing how many people are involved in the ring, but according to search warrants, undercover police have already made two purchases of heroin from at least one of the dealers. That dealer, which will not be named at this time per police request, has been indicted.

While searching one of the dealers, police confiscated not only drugs, but firearms.

According to police reports, these dealers are trafficking the heroin from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The investigation will now involve police from those states as well as federal authorities.

Although this investigation has been going on for five months, it is still in the early stages. Police say more arrests are expected.
