The Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection took part in a nationwide effort to adopt out more animals, rather than euthanizing them.

It's called "Just One Day" and offered free and low-fee adoptions of animals in Roanoke's shelters. At the end of the campaign, 6 animals had been adopted and more than a dozen adoptions were pending.

The RCACP has around 150 animals in need of forever homes. Shelter officials say this is the time of year when puppies and kittens overrun the shelters, so they wanted to free up as much room as possible during this campaign.

The goal was to adopt out at least 15% of the animals at the shelter on Wednesday to avoid euthanasia. The shelter will held extended hours on Wednesday, staying open until 7 p.m.

Although they fell short of their goal, RCACP representatives say the day's adoptions were good news.

The shelter currently has around 70 cats and 90 dogs available for adoption to a forever home. If you are interested in adopting an animal from RCACP, you may call 540.344.4922.
