Thieves steal charity funds from Chesterfield church

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Who would steal from a church? The pastor at Clover Hill Baptist Church in Chesterfield is heartbroken.

"The more we investigated," said Pastor Michael Bayly. "The more it was heartbreaking to see what happened."

Thieves stole hundreds of dollars in cash and coins meant for charity.

They were called baby bottle blessings. The money was going to the Chesterfield Pregnancy Center.

"They are going to have to deal with that, and think about the fact that that is how they made that money," said Pastor Bayly. "They stole it from people who really needed it."

There was no sign of forced entry, and the thieves were neat.

"For some strange reason," said Bayly. "I guess to make us think that they weren't here or we wouldn't recognize it...they put everything back the way they found it."

Pastor Bayly hopes the thieves will return the money.

"It would be better for them to bring it back," said Bayly. "Get it off their conscience and not feel guilty about it. It's really not worth it."

Meanwhile, the church is investing in more security measures.

"It's sad," said Bayly. "I got in ministry to help people, not to always be looking over my shoulder. But that's the time we live in."
