RALEIGH, N.C. -

An official working to get more Democrats elected to the North Carolina House this fall has been charged with driving while impaired and speeding.

Wake County court records show police cited 33-year-old Casey Wilkinson on Thursday. Wilkinson is director of the House Democratic Caucus. His next court appearance is set for August.

Police say Wilkinson was traveling 47 mph in a 35 mph zone when an officer pulled him over around 12:45 a.m. on South Dawson Street. The arresting officer said Wilkinson admitted to drinking and had a blood-alcohol level of .08.

Wilkinson reports to House Minority Leader Larry Hall of Durham, who says Wilkinson still works for the caucus. Hall says the matter is under review to determine what actions are appropriate.
