RALEIGH, N.C. - Wake County Board of Commissioners is set to vote on the annual budget at a meeting on Monday as questions over school funding remain.

Wake County Schools had asked for an additional $39 million in funding for employee raises, but County Manager Jim Hartmann only funded $10 million of that request, leaving a $29 million gap.  Hartmann had said he wanted to wait and see what kind of raises state lawmakers would offer.  As of Sunday night, the House of Representatives and the Senate have passed individual budgets, but have not agreed on a final spending plan.

Wake School leaders said they wanted raises no matter what the state decides, to stay competitive with neighboring counties and lead North Carolina in teacher salaries.  Commissioners have said they will offer some sort of raise, but have not specified how much.

"We grew by 3,800 students this past year.  We're continuing to grow.  Housing starts are up.  Birth rates are going up," Wake County School Board Chair Christine Kushner said,  "You know, kids are going to be coming to our schools and they are strong schools and we need to make sure we have strong teachers."

Following Monday's commissioners meeting, the school board could vote on a temporary budget at their meeting on Tuesday, while they wait on state lawmakers to finish their budget before a July 1 deadline.
