The man who defeated former Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will hold his first campaign event since the massive upset. College professor Dave Brat defeated Cantor by 11 points in last week's primary. Brat will now face Democrat Jack Trammel in November.

Today the Senate Housing Committee will consider Julian Castro to be the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. President Barack Obama selected Castro to replace HUD secretary Shaun Donovan, who's been tapped as the next director of the Office of Management and Budget. As mayor of San Antonio, Castro gained national fame following his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012.

The Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority Board will meet tonight at six at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitors Center. The board is in charge of operating Explore Park in Roanoke and Bedford counties.

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors will have its monthly meeting this afternoon at 1:30. The board will get an update on the county's public safety vehicles...including two new ambulances that will be in-service in September.
