AT&T's 1 gigabit fiber Internet coming to Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The City of Raleigh and AT&T have reached an agreement that will bring AT&T’s fiber Internet to Raleigh as part of the North Carolina Next Generation Network initiative. The agreement was announced Wednesday morning.

The fiber network, called “U-verse with GigaPower,” will have speeds capable of up to one gigabit per second, 10 times faster than any Internet currently available in Raleigh, according to an AT&T release.

One gigabit is fast enough to download 25 songs in one second, download your favorite TV show in less than three seconds, and download an entire HD online movie in less than 36 seconds.

The fiber network will also feature TV services.

The release also states that similar fiber network plans related to the NCNGN initiative have been approved in Durham and Winston-Salem, and are pending approval in Carrboro, Cary, and Chapel Hill.

Venessa Harrison, president of AT&T-North Carolina is quoted in the release saying, “We’ve already received great input from North Carolinians eager for the fastest available speeds. This ultra-fast fiber build will help foster innovation, enhance education, and encourage growth.”

The NCNGN is made up of six cities, four universities, and local business leaders working in the state.

Other plans by the company include expanding both its 4G LTE network and the availability of U-verse services throughout the state.

AT&T has invested more than $1.6 billion in its North Carolina wireless and wired networks between 2011 and 2013, according to AT&T.

Raleigh is also being considered by Google for their Google Fiber network. AT&T’s fiber network plan is not dependent upon whether or not Google comes to Raleigh.
