Roanoke time exchange members swap time, not money

Updated:
ROANOKE (WSLS)- A group of Roanokers is finding a way to get services without money. Instead, they exchange time for their talent.

For example, if you'd like to get a massage, a masseuse is taking part in the Roanoke Valley Time Exchange. It's members each provide a specific service. They track and bank their hours and then spend those hours to get their own needs met. Some of the other services members offer include software engineering, permaculture, bookkeeping.

For every hour you offer a member offers, another member you can buy an hour of a service for himself. No money is involved. Members say it puts everyone on the same level and allows people to do what they love to do when it's not necessarily their job.

"This is a way they can serve the community offering what they love to do," said member and founder Maya Bless. "Then they have a wide range of services they now have access to. That's something independent of anything and it makes them happy and it really fulfills people's lives."

There are nearly 70 members enrolled. There's no fee to join.

The Roanoke Valley Time Exchange will have a new member meeting Monday, June 23 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Compact Cinema located at 16 Church Avenue, SW.
