MONETA (WSLS) - The guitars are being tuned and final preparations are happening around Smith Mountain Lake as Nashville singer/songwriters and businesses prepare for Lyrics on the Lake, which benefits St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Over 20 singer/songwriters will perform at 8 locations, beginning Thursday with an open mic night competition at Hot Shots where contestants have the chance to win a two night stay in Nashville and perform at The Listening Room Cafe and a songwriting with professional songwriters.

Other events include listening parties with various artists at Sunken City Brewing Company, Ole School Sports Pub and Grill and Moosies's Restaurant and Bar, and a cruise on the Virginia Dare with the artists playing at the festival.

The event ends Sunday with live performances and a silent auction at Mango's.

"We have had a lot of growth on the businesses.  This year we had people call us that want to be sponsors.  We even have people calling saying I missed it this year I want to be on it next year so it is really going to help us grow," explains Lyrics on the Lake organizer, Ronnie Hess.

Hot Shots owner, Jeff Schott is ready for the crowds.  He finished his new outdoor pavilion 3 days ago.

"If you know anything about Hot Shots, we are always trying something different.  We filled in the bumper boat pool and laid concrete down," explains Schott.

Down the road at Moosies, owners are preparing for two late nights in a row with midnight performances on Friday and Saturday.

Bryan and Tricia Southard own Moosies. He says there are events for everyone at this festival.

"The after midnight is a jam session, not a scheduled event.  Anyone can come play.  Local musicians everyone is welcome to come sing, play, and have a good time. There is not a lot of structure. It is just fun," Southard said.
