BEDFORD COUNTY (WSLS) - The Bedford County Sheriff's Office arrested a Roanoke man in a murder-for-hire plot and posts on Colgan's Facebook page shed new light into what he may have been up to.
Major Ricky Gardner of the Bedford county sheriffs office said, "there's been a large amount of bitterness built up from Kevin Colgan and he over the last month or so has made numerous Facebook postings insinuating that he would like to have his wife killed as well as made some indirect threats to her and some of her friends."
Since October 2012, 61-year-old Kevin Colgan has been in the divorce process with his wife, Sarah Colgan. Investigators say Kevin made threats to Sarah throughout the process, which resulted in an adult protective order against him.
On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, Kevin Colgan met with an undercover investigator and said he would pay him to kill his wife. Thursday morning, they met in Bedford County and the two drove by Colgan's wife's house, discussing the layout of the home.
The meeting was recorded on video. Sheriff's deputies arrested Colgan shortly after. Investigators say this is not the kind of case they investigate every day. They took several items of evidence from Colgan's home, including cell phones, a GPS and a laptop.
Facebook posts on a profile with Kevin Colgan's name and picture paint a picture of what the man may have been doing.
One post gives detailed information about Colgan's ex-wife's address, work schedule, car, and warns that she is armed. It's unclear if Colgan intended the information to be posted on his wall.
A person responds to the post saying "That's it. I'm done. I ought to call the cops on you."
Colgan responds saying "Why?" and posts again saying "I haven't done a thing illegal," to which the person responds "All this talk of hiring a hit man and [expletive]. Do you hve any idea how insane you sound?"
Colgan responds, "If I am insane, then it is a result of what I have been put through. And I have never said I hired a hit man. I couldn't afford one even if I wanted to."
The two continue to converse in the post and Colgan goes on to say his wife implied during court she would defend herself against him.
Colgan is charged with solicitation to commit murder. Colgan is being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center without bond. The Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Vinton, Bedford, and Virginia State Police Departments all worked together in this investigation.
