"Let's Do Lunch" ticket sales hit 2500 - WSLS 10 NBC in Roanoke/Lynchburg Va

"Let's Do Lunch" event sells more than 2,500 tickets

ROANOKE (WSLS) - The Local Office on Aging will hold it's annual "Let's Do Lunch" fundraiser today.

More than 2,500 meals have already been sold. The event raises tens of thousands of dollars for the Meals on Wheels program.  LOA relies on the event to continue serving hundreds of local seniors.  Without the fundraiser, the organization would have to remove participants and place them on a wait list.

Currently, the Meals on Wheels program provides hot meals to 590 seniors every week day.  However, LOA has been forced to reduce the number of people participating over the last few years due to sequestration.  675 seniors were being served three years ago.

With the reduced numbers, some local seniors are currently on a wait list to be a part of the program.  The number varies but at one point during the last six months, there were 40 seniors waiting to be admitted.

Any extra money raised today will help get those currently on the waiting list added to the program.

Only 20 meal tickets are left before the event sells out.

Meals can be purchased at the LOA starting at 11 am.

Each lunch box will be $20.
