Radford man charged on multiple counts of animal cruelty

RADFORD (WSLS) - A Roanoke man faces 43 charges, including 15 counts of animal cruelty, after police and animal control officers seize over 8 animals and found more dead at his home.

Police and Animal Control Officers with the Radford City Police Department went to a building at 1031 East Main Street in Radford after a complaint of a foul odor coming from the building.

There they found Alexander Nelson, IV of Roanoke, who is the owner of what was once "Classy Critters," a pet store once in operation there.

Officers obtained and executed a search warrant after they noticed a strong odor and could see animals inside in unsanitary conditions.

The Radford Fire Department responded to test air levels and Radford City Building Code Officials were also called to the building. Evidence was collected and animals both alive and deceased were seized.

Radford City Police Department seized three dogs, two turtles, one bearded dragon, one leopard gecko, one fat tailed gecko and numerous fish.They also found dead fish, rodents and a fire-bellied toad.

Nelson is charged with 43 misdemeanors which include 15 animal cruelty charges, 15 Failure of dealer/pet store to provide adequate care, 5 improper disposal of deceased animal, 3 no rabies shots for dogs, 3 no license for dogs and 2 dogs running at large.
