Violent crimes drop after Roanoke rapper and drug dealer taken off the streets

ROANOKE (WSLS) - A Roanoke rapper most famously known by police for dealing drugs in the city was found guilty in federal court Monday.

Oshay Jones, 22 of Roanoke was caught selling crack cocaine. Police say they recovered $40,000 during their initial investigation into his drug operation.

He was most known for selling drugs in the Melrose/Rugby neighborhood of Roanoke City.

Since Jones was arrested, police say that violent crimes in that area has drastically dropped.

Captain Rick Morrison testified that violent crime in the Melrose area went down approximately 18 percent when Jones was incarcerated compared to when he was not. 

Capt. Morrison said crime in that area continues to trend downward. 

The six day trial ended in a guilty verdict. Jones now faces five to forty years in prison. More arrests were made during the investigation, several still await trial.
