Buchanan water project underway, saving customers money

Posted: Updated:
Buchanan (WSLS)- The town of Buchanan is in the process of replacing the majority of its water pipes and the project is already saving people money.

Before the project began, 71 percent of the town's water was lost due to leaky pipes.

That number's been cut down to 58 percent and is expected to lower significantly once all of the pipes are replaced.

"Every gallon of water you pump out of the ground has to be treated, chlorinated and then transported to the different homes," said Buchanan Mayor Larry Hall. "It's a huge cost. By us eliminating the loss of water it's huge for the town and the citizens and that way hopefully we'll never have to raise our rate again."

The multi-million dollar project is largely paid for through a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant.

Hall expects the project to wrap up next spring.
