Fire crews battle Tinker Mountain wildfire

Posted: Updated:

BOTETOURT COUNTY (WSLS)-- The Virginia Department of Forestry is working to fight a wildfire in the Tinker Mountain area of Botetourt County this morning.

Forestry officials say they were first alerted about the fire Tuesday night around 7 p.m.. Today, two fire crews are still fighting the wildfire and a helicopter is expected to provide backup later this morning.

At this point, the wildfire is between one and two acres. It's in an area of the forest near the Appalachian Trail that's difficult for crews to get to, it's an hour walk from where they have to park.

Investigators believe the fire may have started from a campfire or lightening strike.  They're working to get it completely under control and put out before the holiday weekend.
