Employee pulls gun, foils Durham robbery attempt

Durham Police say a man who tried to rob a tobacco store fled after an employee pulled a gun, and was later arrested.

Police say Robert Miller, 53, of 1502 Chapel Hill Road tried to rob Tobacco Plus at 2017 Chapel Hill Road early Friday morning.

An employee told police that a man armed with a long gun demanded money, but fled when the employee pulled out a gun.

The employee fired shots and a bullet struck the back window of the suspect’s vehicle, according to investigators. No one was injured.

A short time later, a police dog tracked to the 1500 block of Chapel Hill Road, where officers located a vehicle matching the description of the one used by the robbery suspect. Officers arrested Miller and charged him with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault by pointing a gun.
