Rough weather grounds July 4th balloon launch

Posted: Updated:

Lexington (WSLS) Weather grounded a popular July 4th event in Lexington.

For the second day in a row, the hot air balloons at the annual balloon rally failed to launch.

On Thursday, thunderstorms were a problem. On Friday, the wind caused safety concerns.

"Weather is always a concern. If it thunderstorms too much we can't do the balloon event and if it's too windy we can’t do anything, if we have fog we can’t do anything weather is a big factor.

Pilots said ideal weather for flying would be less than 5 miles per hour winds. On days when the weather cooperates, it takes teamwork to connect the basket to the envelope and take flight.

"It's a lot of work, especially with the winds" Danielle Pruett, Balloon Crew.

When the weather is rough, it can tossed the massive balloons around similar to a plastic bag in the wind. Experienced pilots, like Kenny Schumate, use the propane to level the balloons.

"The wind can cool the balloon like an ice cube and it's constantly melting right and I'm reheating it with the fire" he said.

While safety remains a top priority, pilots crews and fans hope to see the balloons take flight over Lexington this weekend.
