LITTLETON, N.C. (WSLS) - A Virginia Tech lacrosse player died after an apparent accident on a rope swing at Lake Gaston.

Halifax County deputies said Alex Habel, 20, was using the rope to swing into the lake near Littleton, North Carolina when he was found dead on a rock around 3 p.m. Friday. Habel is from Midlothian.

Habel was a junior at Virginia Tech and played on the club lacrosse team.

Alex Habel or "Habes" as his teammates called are trying to stay strong after learning their friend died over the July 4th weekend.

"I was shocked I was really upset I was at the firework show and I put my head down and immediately started crying," Matt Schroeder, the Head Lacrosse Coach said.

"Habes" played Lacrosse for two years at Virginia Tech and Schroeder says no matter how intense the workout, he always did it with a smile.

"He was always one of those guys the first one at practice hard work ethic determined he was a coaches dream," Schroeder said.

His lifting partner Joseph Rittenhouse says he was always impressed how well he could easily multitask.

Rittenhouse says Habes is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha or Pike Fraternity, was an excellent student and held a job still had time to play.

"I was amazed at how he was always happy he was a jovial guy," Joseph Rittenhouse said.

Deputies and agents with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are still trying to determine how Habel died.

This is the second Virginia Tech student killed in less than a week. Darren Hankins, 21, from Chesapeake drowned at the Blacksburg Quarry Wednesday night when he swimming with several other people. Hankins was a member of the Varsity wrestling squad at Virginia Tech who competed for two seasons but sat out the 2013-2014 season due to an injury.
