One local congressman believes comprehensive immigration reform won't happen this year.
Republican Representative Morgan Griffith (R-Salem) said the relationship between President Barack Obama and Congress is sour, creating a lot of distrust.
That's why Griffith believes only a step-by-step immigration plan can get through Congress, especially with midterm elections just four months away.
"Something can be done before November if the president is willing to recognize that we have to take it one step at a time, instead of trying to go for the long ball and starting off at our own 20 and throwing it into the end zone," Griffith said.
President Obama is asking Congress for $2 billion to help secure the border and deal with children already in this country illegally.
