Representative Morgan Griffith (R-Salem) believes Congress can get behind and help pay for a plan to bring Amtrak into Tennessee and Georgia as well.
"I'm excited (rail service) is coming to Roanoke, but we have to make sure our ridership is strong," Griffith said. "As we look forward it's not just into the rest of Southwest Virginia, I think we have to look at being in Bristol, Chattanooga, Atlanta."
He hopes to eventually connect those cities with tracks in Lynchburg and Washington, creating an efficient system.
Griffith said Congress needs to look at Amtrak as a transportation tool as much as a business, since it could be taking vehicles off of the highways.
