Train derailment leads to Rt 21 closures in Wytheville

 UPDATE (11:32 p.m. Tuesday) -- Route 21 (Grayson Road) is now open to the public. 


Wythe County officials are still asking drivers to use caution in the area, because crews will be still be working over the next several days.

WYTHEVILLE (WSLS)-- A train derailment just after 5 p.m. Monday night is still causing lane closures this morning.

Route 21 near Old Stage Road is closed in both directions. There are detours in place.  Southbound traffic is being rerouted onto Route 667 to Route 665 and back onto Route 21.  Northbound traffic is being diverted onto Route 667.

Expect delays in the area.

Wythe County officials say they are removing cars off the line and detouring the routes around the tracks. Local residents will be allowed to pass through.

Some of the automobiles on the derailed train cars had a gallon of gas in the tanks, but officials say the area is save.

A local restaurant owner says some people were forced to slept in the restaurant parking lot Monday night. She also said business is doing well despite the accident, but she hopes it gets cleared soon.
