WYTHE COUNTY (WSLS) - State Corporation Commission railroad officials say that a defect was found in the same stretch of railroad that the Norfolk Southern train derailed on Monday afternoon.

Spokesperson Ken Schrad says that one defect was found during an inspection on April 22nd 2014. Schrad says that a railway that only shows one defect is typically very safe. He says that stretch of track is inspected every 90 days.

The inspection report was then sent to the Federal Railway Association who would then contact Norfolk Southern to make necessary repairs. Norfolk Southern has thirty days to respond to any notices of track defects.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board says it is not investigating the train derailment. An official with the NTSB says they will "investigate an accident if there are serious injuries, fatalities, passengers on board, and/or a significant release of hazardous materials that pose safety and health risks to the public."

The NTSB says other considerations include preliminary information suggesting an opportunity to explore issues that have national interest and can possibly lead to NTSB safety recommendations.
