2 arrested in shooting following Fayetteville anti-violence rally

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Police arrested two more suspects Tuesday in connection with a robbery and shooting that occurred just hours after an anti-violence rally in Fayetteville.

Christopher Michael Hughes, 16, was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent kill, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Darrell LeMon Cozart, 17, was also arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Hugh and Cozart are suspects to have been involved in a shooting July 9 in the area of Northumberland Street near the S. Reilly Road intersection. Police said four males approached 32-year-old Gregorio Atiles and attempted to rob him.

When he tried to run away, a shotgun round was fired at Atiles. He was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment where he was later released

On July 12, officers arrested Dominique Dewayne Freddie, 21, on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robber and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Police are still searching for 21-year-old Jaytez Anthony James in connection with the robbery and shooting. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective J. Pacurari with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).

The July 9 shooting came just hours after an anti-violence rally wrapped up outside the Cumberland County Courthouse in Fayetteville. Atiles' ex-girlfriend, Shaniqua Simmons, who was murdered at the former Cambridge Arms Apartments in May, was honored at the rally.
