Formerly homeless child raises awareness for Roanoke Rescue Mission

ROANOKE (WSLS) - "Packing the Park" of Wednesday's Salem Red Sox game also makes a difference for the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

A six-year-old, who just last month was homeless, is throwing out the first pitch.

At the beginning of June, little Miranda Bryant and her father Mark we're living at the Roanoke Rescue Mission. With the Mission's help, they soon moved out and into an apartment.

The Mission asked Miranda to attend Wednesday night's game as a representative of the difference the non-profit makes for families struggling. She says her favorite part of staying at the mission was getting to go to day camp.

“In day camp, I have so much fun and we get to go in the creek and it's so much fun I get to spend some time with my friends,” Miranda explained.

“If it weren't for this place I don't know where we would have been. This really was a rescue and everybody here was really helpful and real nice,” Mark said.

The mission will also collect school supplies at the park out of a bubble making van.
