WNCN's Education Town Hall explores teacher salaries, Common Core

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Educators and citizens packed WNCN’s Education Town Hall Wednesday night in Raleigh as key leaders and teachers met to discuss the future of education in North Carolina.

One key part of the discussion was on Common Core, which the North Carolina House just voted Wednesday to drop in North Carolina. The Senate had already approved the bill and Gov. Pat McCrory said he will sign it.

June Atkinson, the state superintendent of public schools, said the bill would set up a commission to review standards, and she expressed confidence that the state’s students would get the education they need.

Many expressed concern about teacher turnover, which has become rampant as teacher salaries have stalled in North Carolina. Several teachers expressed concern about salaries in the special.

State Sen. Mike Woodward, D-Durham, said any business with turnover like what happening with teachers would seriously re-evaluate how it was treating its employees.

The special began on television and online and continued on WNCN.com at 7:30 p.m.
