Solarize Blacksburg participants enjoy green benefits

Posted: Updated:
BLACKSBURG (WSLS)- The City of Roanoke is anticipating strong participation in its Solarize Roanoke campaign underway right now.

Dozens of people in Blacksburg took part in Solarize Blacksburg campaign earlier this year. Some are getting solar installed right now while others are reaping the benefits now that they're using it.

Mike Griggs and his family thought about doing it several years ago but said the cost was prohibitive. He says they couldn't pass up the savings incentives through the program and the future payback.

"We're anticipating about $150 to $200 a month savings with the system," Griggs said. "It would typically be more in the summer but that's an average over the year."

Mason Cavell with Community Housing Partners, which is behind both the Blacksburg and Roanoke Solarize programs, says the savings is about 15% off regular price for the whole installation. Homeowners who upgrade to solar may also be eligible for federal and local tax credits.
