Durham police identify 3 teens who caused bus explosion

DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham police said Thursday that they have identified the three teens who left a drink bottle on a bus that exploded around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The police said they are still weighing whether to press charges.

Police originally thought the explosion was the result of a "Drano Bomb," which is a homemade chemical bomb. Damien Graham, director of communications and public affairs at Triangle Transit, said something in the water bottle had a reaction.

The bus driver and a passenger were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out and were released. There was also no significant damage to the bus, police said.

In a 911 call, a caller says "the jug exploded" and had the bus driver coughing.

Video released by the police showed that the teens were only on the bus for a short time. They were in the back seats and placed the bottle in the row in front of them under a seat.

The liquid burst from the bottle after the teens got off the bus shortly after getting on.
