Science is the focus of a week long camp for kids in Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS) - While some kids are enjoying the last bit of summer at the pool or playing outside, some kids are excited to be learning about science and medicine at Medical Research Camp.

This is the fourth year that Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Western Virginia Science Museum have partnered for the week long event that offers students from sixth to eight grade an opportunity to learn from real scientists.

Alexia Dinsmore, Isaac Bouldin and Saira Ahmed are three of eighteen kids who will learn about science and technology and the impact on the medical field.

Ahmed already has plans for a medical future. She explains, "I would either be an oncologist or radiologist. I like that people can come up with cures for diseases help treat people."

Dr. Michael Friedlander, Executive Director of VTCRI says,"They are in a real medical research institute. They get to meet with scientists during the week. They get to see real facilities where research is happening and become integrated in the whole thing and feel like they are part of it. I think it is a great way to plant a seed. Of course with a lot of these kids you don't have to plant a seed they are really so bright and so passionate and so curious about everything already."
