3 in Raleigh family charged in alcohol-related death

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Three members of a Raleigh family and an ABC Store clerk have been arrested and charged with providing alcohol to a teen before who died in a wreck earlier this summer.

Thomas Blake Matthews, 18, is charged with buying alcohol for the celebration. His parents, 59-year-old Charles Joseph Matthews and 52-year-old Kimberly Hunt Matthews are charged with aiding and abetting the consumption of alcohol by minors.

James Gordon Wilson, who works at the Wake County ABC Store in Cameron Village, the location where the alcohol was purchased, was also charged with selling spirituous liquor to a person less than 21 years of age.

Police said 18-year-old Jonathon Gregory Taylor left a wedding being hosted by the Charles and Kimberly Matthews just before the June 29 wreck. Investigators think Taylor was speeding and under the influence of alcohol when he crashed.

The investigation showed that Taylor, along with other underage persons, was allowed to consume additional alcoholic beverages at the wedding. At least one other underage person was hospitalized as a result of consuming alcoholic beverages at the event.

The Matthews are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 19. It was not clear if those charged have attorneys.

The North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services coordinates and communicates policies and strategies that educate, encourage and empower individuals, families, organizations and local communities to respond proactively to alcohol and other drug prevention, education, intervention and treatment issues.
