ST LUCIE COUNTY, FL - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says a St. Lucie County man was caught with nearly 300 stolen sea turtle eggs.

The FWC says they received a tip the man was on Diamond Sands beach taking the eggs. Officers responded to discover a disturbed sea turtle nest and 55-year-old James Odel McGriff of Riviera Beach to have a total of 299 eggs in his backpack.

McGriff was booked into the St. Lucie County jail.

The FWC says McGriff was also arrested in 2002 for selling 12 eggs to an undercover officer and possessing 27 dozen pre-bagged eggs for sale.

Sea turtle eggs are protected under the Marine Turtle Protection Act. The FWC says sea turtles are among the oldest creatures on the planet and all five species in Florida are endangered or threatened.
