Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be following today

Middle and high school economics teachers from Southwest Virginia will be at Radford University today and tomorrow for a conference.  The conference will explore several topics, including economic growth, entrepreneurship, the great recession and ethics.  Teachers can take what they learn back to their students to prepare them to study economics at the college level.

The U.S. Navy Band comes to Roanoke today.  The Star City is one of five cities to host a performance.  The band's Country Current performance features modern country music and bluegrass.  The free performance begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the Elmwood Park Amphitheater in downtown.

The Radford Army Ammunition Plant holds a public meeting tonight to discuss drone testing results.  The test found higher than expected levels of pollutants during open burns at the plant, with lead and arsenic both being elevated.  The majority of other substances were lower than expected.

Senator Mark Warner continues his tour of Southwest Virginia today.  He will meet with local business and community members this morning in Galax before traveling to Martinsville for lunch with community leaders.  He will end the day in Danville, talking about food deserts.

VDOT will perform testing today at Natural Bridge.  Workers will perform Light Detection and Ranging tests.  This will help the Department of Conservation and Recreation as it develops its master plan and to preserve the structure.

Students and teachers at St. John Neumann Academy will start the school year today in a new building.  The new 22,000 square foot facility has been built over the past year.  The new school will allow for enrollment growth.  It has 16 classrooms, a technology lab, multipurpose room and more.

Operators of the Gathright Dam in Covington will conduct a pulse release of water today from Lake Moomaw.  The releases are designed to create river flow conditions that would occur without the dam during heavy rainfall.  Water levels will rise on the Jackson River between three and four-and-a-half feet.  The release will occur between 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Norfolk Southern holds an emergency responder training session this morning.  The training is part of the company's Operation Awareness and Response program.  It works to strengthen relationships with first responders and provide training on transporting hazardous materials. 

A public memorial service takes place this morning for the woman who was killed during last weekend's car attack in Charlottesville.  James Fields, Jr. is charged with second-degree murder after police say he drove his car into a crowd.  The service starts this morning at 11 a.m. at the Paramount Theatre with a reception following.  WSLS 10 will have a crew there.  We will have more tonight on WSLS starting at 5 p.m.
