What's News Today: May 24, 2017

Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be following today

A Lynchburg man at the center of a viral video, showing a violent encounter with police, will be sentenced today.  According to the Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney, Xavier Crute was found guilty on charges of assault and battery against a law enforcement officer and obstruction of justice.  The jury recommended a two and a half year sentence and a $1,200 fine.  Officers say that Crust refused to let them in when they were called to his home for a welfare check in March 2016.  During the struggle, Crute punched an officer in the mouth and bit his finger. 

A summit takes place today for new and prospective business owners.  Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea will lead the summit today, introducing entrepreneurs to best practices for streamlining the opening and operation of a business in the city.

A check presentation takes place today, helping save animals in central Virginia. The Petco Foundation will give $400,000 over the next two years to the Lynchburg Humane Society.  The money will be used to assist with low cost spay, neuter and medical services and the creation of No Kill VA support services to help save more animal's lives. 

Washington and Lee University holds its traditional baccalaureate service today.  Rebecca Linder Blachly, director of the Office of Government Relations for the Episcopal Church will speak.  Commencement is Thursday.

People living and visiting Roanoke will soon be able to rent bikes.  RIDE Solutions and Zagster will announce a partnership today.  The bike share program gives riders the opportunity to rent and ride bikes throughout the city.
