Severe storms, flooding possible Wednesday evening

Damaging winds, heavy rain main threats

ROANOKE, Va. – Another very potent storm system is sliding in from the southwest, and as a result, another round of heavy rain and severe storms will be possible.

The focal point for severe weather late Wednesday afternoon and evening will be a warm front surging in from the south. This will not only provide more instability to parts of the area, especially Southside, but will also act as a trigger mechanism to get storms going.

The area will be in a highly sheared environment, meaning winds are moving in different directions at different levels of the atmosphere. The storms that "ride" the warm front will have a chance to rotate and potentially produce a tornado. The best chance for that to happen will be right along the Virginia, North Carolina border.

Strong storms are still possible further north, but the best chance for a storm to potentially produce a tornado will be held in that area.

Along with the damaging wind, hail and tornado threat right along the warm front, heavy rain is likely everywhere.

Be on the lookout for flash flooding, as more heavy rain is expected on already saturated ground and swollen rivers. The numbers you see below could double or triple in the heaviest thunderstorms.
