...FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1215 AM EDT THURSDAY FOR NORTHEASTERN ASHE AND SOUTHWESTERN GRAYSON COUNTIES... At 721 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated rain has ended. Between 2.5 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flooding impacts will continue, but no additional rainfall is expected. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Mouth Of Wilson... Grassy Creek... Rugby... Volney... Grayson Highlands State Park... This includes the following streams and drainages... Little Helton Creek, Wilson Creek, New River, Jerd Branch, Little Wilson Creek, Bear Branch, Fox Creek, North Fork New River, Grassy Creek, Helton Creek and South Fork New River. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. More rain/storms in the forecast for a while now...

We began Wednesday dry with patchy fog and some sun…but by afternoon, more clouds bubbled up, which led to the formation of isolated storms. The coverage area of these storms looks be greatest through sunset in areas along and west of the Blue Ridge Parkway. With a cold front approaching from the west on Thursday and Friday, our chances for rain/storms will increase area-wide. And that unsettled weather looks to stay with us through the holiday weekend. The warmth and humidity will stick around as well.

Tonight: Any evening t-showers end, fog may form…muggy with lows in the middle 60s.

Thursday: Partly to mostly cloudy with scattered showers and storms…warm and humid with highs in the middle 80s.

Friday looks similar to Thursday, although we may see a little more sunshine. But, more passing showers/storms are in the forecast to end the work week, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will again reach the middle 80s.

The holiday weekend (and unofficial start to summer!) is almost here! Each and every day this weekend will see some sun, some clouds, and some rain/storms. Saturday at this point may be the driest day with pop-up t-showers forming…the coverage area of showers and storms looks to be larger on Sunday and Monday at this point. Scattered showers and storms look likely these two days, especially during the heating of the day. So, looking ahead to the weekend…the morning hours look driest (and brightest), with the afternoon/evening looking to be stormier. A couple of storms this holiday weekend (especially on Sunday and Memorial Day) could be on the strong-to-severe side with heavy rain, thunder/lightning, wind, and hail being the main threats. We’ll need to keep an eye on threat for localized flooding as well. It will remain warm and humid with highs on Saturday topping out in the middle 80s, falling into the low-to-mid 80s on Sunday and Memorial Day.

A little pattern change may be heading our way on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. We don’t look as stormy and we won’t quite as warm nor as humid. While a couple of late-day t-showers are still possible both days, they will be few and far between. In addition we will be partly to mostly sunny with highs close to 80 degrees.
