Petition started to honor Carroll County deputy at alma mater

Curtis Bartlett was killed in the line of duty


GALAX, Va. – The Galax community is coming together to honor a Carroll County deputy who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year.

Community members started a petition to name Galax High School's new football field in honor of alumni Curtis Bartlett. As of Saturday, the petition had already gained more than 700 signatures.
According to the school district, the field is currently being renovated. Family members say Bartlett was a fitness guru, army veteran and loved working in law enforcement including his time as a school resource officer.

Bartlett died in a crash in March while responding to a police chase.

Joseph A. Lambert, 21, of Goodview, was charged with with one felony count of eluding police that results in the death of a police officer, possession of marijuana, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants in Salem, Virginia.
