Lezla Gooden joined the WSLS 10 news team in September 2017, as a reporter.
Although born and raised in Mitchellville, Maryland, Virginia has always held a special place in her heart. She used to spend summers writing her own original stories, with her grandparents, in the Hampton Roads area and took occasional trips to see the fall foliage in the Shenandoah Valley.
In 2015, Lezla graduated with honors from Hampton University with a degree in broadcast journalism. She was the recipient of the Emma L. Bowen Foundation Media Merit Scholarship, where she worked at C-SPAN and NBC’s Politics Nation. During her undergraduate years, she served as co-anchor and on-air reporter for Hampton University’s WHOV television and radio stations. Some of her stories covered local politicians and the historic blizzard of 2013.
She was also nominated by her school to serve as “Ms. Scripps Howard” –the official ambassador for the School of Communications at Hampton. During her senior year, she also worked as a freelance reporter for Cox Communications in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Upon leaving Hampton, she made her way back home to the Washington, D.C. area just in time for the 2016 presidential election. It was there that Lezla enriched herself further in politics and journalism by working at CNN's D.C. bureau. While working in the nation’s capital, Lezla earned her master’s degree in journalism from Georgetown University in 2016.
Lezla loves being here in Southwest Virginia and is always looking to hear from viewers.
