Ceremony held in Danville to remember VT shooting victims

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the shooting

DANVILLE, Va. – A Virginia Tech alumnist in Danville is trying to start a new tradition to honor the 32 people killed during the campus shooting ten years ago.

Monday morning, a remembrance ceremony was held at the fountain in downtown Danville.

The director of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Danville, Patricia Daniel, decided to organize the ceremony after receiving an e-mail from the university last week asking alumni to do something in their communities to honor the victims.

Danville's mayor, Delegate Danny Marshal, and others spoke and the names of the victims were read.

"I did not want the opportunity to pass, so we organized our brothers and sisters and fellow Hokie nation," Daniel explained. "Danville has a strong Hokie nation and we felt that this would be the right thing to do."

After everyone spoke, a bell was rung 32 times and balloons were released.
