ROANOKE – Mary Rapoport from the Virginia Egg Council is back (with some special guests) for a fun French Toast recipe you can teach your kids.
French toast
This is the perfect recipe for kids learning to cook. It's quick. It's easy. It's pretty-much fool-proof. And it's versatile enough with the toppings and types of bread, that most kids will find a version that they love and can call their own. Cooking on heat means they'll need to be on a stool to be tall enough to see into the skillet so they can cook safely. And a grown up should be around, just in case.
2 eggs
3 tablespoons milk
4 slices day-old bread
Cooking spray
Large cookie cutters
Place bread slice on a cutting board and cut out a shape with a large cookie cutter. Toss the leftover bread out to the birds.
Beat eggs and milk in a shallow dish until blended. Soak 1 bread slice at a time in egg mixture, turning once, to soak the other side.
Place a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. When a drop of water sizzles on it, spray the pan with cooking spray. Place 2 bread slices in skillet and cook until golden brown when you peek underneath (about 2 - 3 minutes) then flip and cook the other side. Place on a clean plate.
Repeat with the other two slices of bread. Makes 4 - 5 slices French toast
Serve with any of these toppings:
· Powdered sugar
- Cut up fruit
· Butter and Maple syrup
· Jelly
· Ice cream and chocolate sauce
· Whipped cream and chopped nuts
Chocolate French toast Sandwich: Place one slice of dipped bread in pan - sprinkle on some chocolate chips and top with another slice of dipped bread, making a chocolate filled sandwich. When the bottom is done, carefully, flip the chocolate sandwich and cook the other side.
PB & J French toast: After dipping bread in egg batter, dip into chopped peanut topping, then cook. Serve this with jelly for a peanut-butter and jelly flavor.
