Lynchburg mother, children prepare for WSLS 10 Home for the Holidays build
LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) -- WSLS 10 will kick off its annual Home for the Holidays build on November 29 with the Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity, but the recipient of the home is already preparing.
Thanksgiving will be a little different for Kennesha Hopkins and her family.
"Just dinner and straight packing mode. Starting December 1, it's like all about packing, all about getting ready because the 15th will be here before you know it," she said.
December 15 is when she'll get the keys to her Habitat Home. It's a better fit, she says, than the place she rents for herself, her 13-year-old son Keyon and nearly 2-year-old daughter, Kaniyah.
"We were living in a two-bedroom home. Of course my kids are a little spaced out I have a boy and a girl now so that was leading me to think I needed more room."
Hopkins said the road to home ownership was scary.
"I knew I didn't want to rent anymore and I didn't know if I could go the traditional route and having a high-priced mortgage," she explained.
She attended classes as part of the Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity process and applied last year. She was excited to be approved six months later.
"I was just ecstatic. I felt blessed. I was happy. I was jumping up-and-down screaming calling my mom and dad everyone."
Her son Keyon is looking forward to having his own room, where he will display his trophies from football and basketball.
"Set them up on my wall or something," he said. "Make a trophy case."
While Kennesha says she's "looking forward to painting walls. You know when you rent and you have to live in white walls so I look forward to customizing my house to our needs and just decorating. Starting fresh," she said.
A fresh start in her home for the holiday.
This is the third annual Home for the Holidays build.
