Buena Vista plant announces closure, affecting 46 jobs

BUENA VISTA (WSLS 10) - Mundet Hermetite Inc. announced Wednesday it would close its plant in Buena Vista by September, 2015.

The manufacturing operation said the closure was a "major step to match production capacity with the current market demand for cigarette products in the US."

Chairman and CEO of Mundet, Stephen Young, said he regrets the impact the closure would have on the 46 hourly and salaried workers employed by the company and the community in Buena Vista.

The company said it would work with the United Steelworkers Union to help make the transition for employees go smoothly. It did not outline what that plan would entail.

Mundet Hermetite Inc. in Buena Vista has produced cigarette tipping paper for the U.S. cigarette market for 50 years. Its operations will be consolidated to the Colonial Heights and Surgoinsville, Tennessee manufacturing facilities.

Mundet, Inc. is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and currently employs 260 employees.
