New era for Hotel Roanoke and its Double Tree cookie
ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – A new era will be ushered in to Hotel Roanoke, the Star City's oldest and most iconic hotel.
Hotel management announced Wednesday that Hotel Roanoke will no longer be a Hilton Double Tree hotel, but will instead join Hilton's Curio collection. The Curio collection by Hilton is a global set of upscale and luxury hotels hand-picked for their distinctive character and personality.
Currently, there are 22 Curio hotels in the world. Hotel Roanoke will become the first in Virginia.
Hotel officials say this distinction will allow Hotel Roanoke to remain unique and carry a local feel while offering world class service.
"Some are well known. Some are local legends, but each hotel in the Curio Collection is a masterpiece that reflects the best of its surroundings," a quote Hilton uses to describes its selection of Curios.
This will also mean changes for the beloved cookies at Hotel Roanoke. The cookies are typically a Double Tree amenity. General Manager Gary Walton says they will go along with the Double Tree brand, but they will be available elsewhere in the hotel. He says they plan to pick a new amenity in place of the cookie to give to guests. He gave chocolates from downtown business Chocolate Paper as an example. He says he wants to incorporate a unique, local flavor to go along with the Curio brand.
Built in 1882, Hotel Roanoke is a fully-restored Tudor-style hotel that contains 35 meeting rooms, a 63,000 state of the art conference space and a hotel ballroom that can accommodate up to 1,400 guests. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is a factor that helped Hotel Roanoke gain Curio status.
The transition to Curio will be official on February 28th.
The Virginian in Lynchburg which is currently undergoing major renovations will also become part of Hilton's Curio collection. Renovations are expected to be complete in early 2017.
