Tax filing deadline extended to Monday
Procrastinators rejoice! If you haven't filed your 2015 taxes yet, you have an extra work day to do so.
The 2016 tax deadline is actually on Monday, April 18th.
The deadline is normally April 15th, however, it was extended this year because of the holiday Emancipation Day.
According to the IRS, the term "legal holiday" includes a holiday observed in the District of Columbia. Emancipation Day is a legal holiday in the District.
What is Emancipation Day?
The District of Columbia Emancipation Act was passed by congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1862. After the Civil War ended, D.C. residents held the first Emancipation Day parade on April 19, 1886.
Although yearly celebrations continued to 1901, Emancipation Day did not become an official holiday in Washington D.C. until 2005.
